An Adaptive LIC Rendering Method for Fluid Artistic Style

    • Fluid artistic style is an important part in art field, which expresses artists' inner feeling by exaggerated fluid lines. Many algorithms have been able to simulate pen-and-ink painting, oil painting, color painting and so on very well. But there is little research on fluid artistic style in non-photorealistic rendering (NPR). Applying LIC algorithm to non-photorealistic rendering, an adaptive LIC rendering method for fluid artistic style is presented. First, the carve vector field is calculated from the gradient field of source's luminance image. And the structured vector field needed by LIC rendering is computed by increasing and smoothing the carve vector field. Disturbing source image randomly produces texture image. Then the algorithm convoles texture image with the structured vector field adaptively. To form natural and smooth rendering results, variable LIC convolution step-length and step-number are produced according to the local characteristics of the structured vector field and the texture image separately. Finally, the algorithm transfers color characteristics of source reference image to the rendering result using color transferring algorithm, which makes the rendering result full of rich color like oil painting. Experimental results comfirm that this method can create vivid and flexible fluid artistic style such as van Gogh's style.
