Abstract: This paper expounds systematically the concept, tasks, facilities and methods of software understanding, and stresses on the discussion of file-based software understanding based on understanding how a software works and knowledge-based software understanding based on understanding what a software does. Various kinds of software understanding tools show the latest development in this software research area.
