Abstract: So far there has been no authoritative definition for object-oriented database. In order to get its essentials, we use a comparison method to study this problem. Similarities and dissimilarities between these two kinds of databases are analyzed from the historical point of view. Function and performance differences between object-oriented database and relational database have also been discussed in detail.
