Abstract:The views expressed here are based on our experience gained in devising distributed parallel processing systems mainly for research on asynchronous parallel algorithms of solving partial differential equations and synthesizing other papers concerned.Problems related to evaluation of distributed multiprocessor architectures and future computers are discussed.It seems to be quite reasonable in next generation of computers to use distributed multiprocessor architectures for making computer systems flexible.In theory and practice,extensive development of asynchronous parallel algorithms including the piecemeal approach employed to solve many kinds of problems will be the key of efficiently utilizing large-scale parallel architectures.It seems likely that no single general-purpose architecture will be found universally suitable for all tasks.Fifth-generation computer suggested by Japanese is significant,but it is only one of a variety of architectures in future.However,it is possible to build up severalhybrid architectures,each containing the characteristics of at least two types of architectures.
