Abstract:
The mobility management is a challenging topic in mobile computing environment. HLR (home location register) and VLR (visitor location register) are currently used in personal communication service networks in some countries. The basic HLR/VLR scheme of mobility management, where HLR has to be updated as soon as a mobile crosses the boundary of a RA (registration area), reduces its performance. Furthermore, the cost of updating HLR is significant. In this paper, a strategy of pointer forwarding with a threshold is proposed. Comparing the cost of the strategy proposed with that of the basic HLR/VLR scheme and the conventional pointer forwarding strategy, leads to the conclusion that the strategy proposed outperforms the others so long as a suitable threshold is chosen.
