Abstract: Usage approaches, features and applications of all sorts of external memories are described from the hierarchical storage's point of view. An analysis is also made of magnetic disk units, magnetic tape units, optical disk units and library devices in terms of their performance, their status in information processing sysems, their present development level as well as their development trends in the future.
