Abstract: In this paper, the past, the present and the future of image retrieval are analyzed, and the main issues at different research phases are also discussed. The key research issues of content based image retrieval are discussed extensively and comprehensively. The typical prototype systems of content based image retrieval are introduced. Based on the survey, some open issues, which need to be researched further, are presented, and the future research trends are also given.
