Multi-resolution Data Storage Method for Region Query in Sensor Networks

    • Under the background of wireless sensor network, because large communication energy cost accounts for a substantial proportion in the total energy cost in nodes, and users may propose some query requirements with different resolutions from coarse to fine, it’s necessary to establish multi-resolution data storage mechanism in sensor network. Aiming at multi-resolution data storage problem in wireless sensor network, firstly a multi-resolution data compression and storage strategy called MDCS is proposed cautiously, which instructs nodes in the wireless sensor network to produce approximations with multi-resolutions. Then nodes store approximations hierarchically in the network which are dealt as follows. In low-level sensor nodes, sensor data are ranked and approximated using spatial correlations inside region unit; in high-level nodes, sensor data are dealt by approximation and clustering technologies using spatial correlations between adjacent region units. These operations produce approximation results with resolutions from coarse to fine. Secondly, a region query processing method based on MDCS is proposed, which can be used to do region query processing operations according to the resolution threshold given by the user, and then results would be sent back to the user. Simulation experiment shows that multi-resolution region query operations can be efficiently supported and significant benefits can be achieved with this region query processing method based on MDCS.
