Abstract
This paper is devoted to gateway design based on the author's experience obtained in designing Washing Machine (WM), which is the gateway between two local area networks at the National Physical Laboratory in UK. Important issues pertinent to the gateway design, such as the decision of protocol conversion layers, protocol conversion method, PDU-mapping and address-mapping, routing problem, and the internal flow control in the gateway, are discussed and clarified.
