Software automation is the fundamental approach to the improvement of software productivity and also contributes to the improvement of software quality. This paper describes various meanings of software automation and its basic implementation approaches, with emphasis on deductive synthesis and program transformation. Finally, the outline of the experimental software automation system NDAUTO is given.
