COMPARISON OF TWO INTERNET SERVICE MODELS

    • Future computer network will become an integrated services network, which can provide various different services to support a wide range of network applications. This integrated services network is built by using many kinds of service performance assurance mechanisms upon a general packet switched network. This paper focuses on the comparison of two service models proposed by IETF aiming at implementing an integrated services network upon the Internet. First, the functions of their building blocks of the two models are analyzed, and then the differences between their provided services and service related mechanisms are compared. The two model’s advantages and disadvantages are also compared in terms of services characteristics and implementation characteristics and their internal relationship is pointed out. An extended hybrid model is proposed based on the above comparisons, which merge the advantages of the two service models together. Finally, new research on the extended hybrid model and our opinions on the building of integrated services network is put forward.
